Kelvyn Park Field House

On July 9, 2010 the Summer of Service youth went on a walking trip around the neighborhood of Logan Square. Their first destination was the Kelvyn Park Field of the Chicago Park District located just half a block southwest from Kelvyn Park High School.

Students were able to visit the field house of the park. The field house provides summer programs for kids. The Summer of Service youth leaders were able talk to some of the volunteers and had the chance to interview them. Through the interview the leaders were able to discover that the park not only provides programs for kids during the summer, but also opportunities in which youth from the area can begin to volunteer at age 13 to work with the young kids. In fact, the volunteers who were interviewed were adolescents from the neighborhood. One of the adolescents was a recent Kelvyn Park High School graduate. All of the volunteers told the Summer of Service leaders that volunteering with the young kids was a great experience.

The young kids who were there seemed to appear to enjoy themselves and have a great time being with the youth volunteers. Two children, a seven-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy, were interviewed and asked what they thought of the summer programs offered by the park. They both responded with, “fun.” The two children went on to describe their older volunteers as “funny” and “nice” people.

The young boy went on to express his thoughts about whether or not he will participate in the summer programs next year by stating, “Yes, and next year and the next one, until I am 13.” When asked if he plans to volunteer when he is 13 he answered, “Yes.”
The Summer of Service youth leaders had a great experience visiting the Kelvyn Park Field House. They bided farewell and continued their walking trip their next destination . . . Ziggy’s Corner Store.
